Jade

Jade owes its name to the Spanish piedra de ijada, a term coined by 15th-century conquistadors referring to the iliac area where the stone was believed to bring relief. Long regarded as a symbol of longevity and compassion, jade has held a central place in many cultures, especially across Asia. Often associated with green, jade actually spans a broad spectrum: soft blues, earthy browns, refined greys, delicate purples, vibrant oranges and reds. Its smooth, almost silky surface and distinctive density give it a recognisable, quietly powerful presence. Used in Europe during the Neolithic period for tools and ceremonial objects, jade later became the imperial stone of China, where artists carved it into intricate ornaments and miniature works of art. Its cultural significance remains deeply rooted today. Deposits are also found in Russia, Canada and New Zealand, each offering unique nuances and textures. With its soft touch and naturally sensual quality, jade continues to inspire contemporary designers such as Fernando Jorge, who explore its sculptural and organic potential.
