Founded in 2008 by Japanese designer Shinobu Marotta, TALKATIVE offers refined, graphic jewellery that feels both light and deeply expressive. Trained in visual arts, Shinobu imagines each creation as a personal talisman, infused with history, emotion, and a cosmopolitan sensibility. Crafted in Japan by master artisans, her pieces reveal the raw charm of fine stones and sculpted materials, chosen for their natural forms, striking inclusions, or unusual patterns. Among her signature collections, CREST stands out for its unique visual identity and cultural depth. Inspired by traditional Japanese crests — kamon — the collection pays tribute to these centuries-old emblems once used to mark family heritage on garments and ceremonial objects. The flat-cut silhouettes of CREST designs are delicately set against the curved lines and vibrant tones of hardstones, creating a refined tension between form and material. But CREST also tells a story of thoughtful transformation. During her collaboration with Takuma Gemstone Sculpture, a workshop renowned for carving Buddhist altarware and tea bowls from large rough stones, Shinobu was struck by the beauty of the leftover fragments — pieces often dismissed due to their cracks, asymmetry, or irregular colouration. Rather than waste them, she chose to elevate these offcuts into jewellery with a wild, painterly character. Materials like agate and jasper — rarely used in fine jewellery — are reborn as unique earrings that celebrate the expressive power of imperfection, shaped by nature and refined by hand.
