Ivory
Also known as vegetable ivory, tagua ivory comes from the seed of the Phytelephas palm, which grows naturally in the forests of Ecuador, Colombia and Panama. When dried, the seed acquires a hardness and creamy tone remarkably similar to animal ivory, while remaining entirely plant-based, renewable and environmentally friendly.
Its smooth, softly satin surface can be carved with precision. Each seed carries subtle variations in colour or grain, reflecting its natural origin. Dense yet gentle to the touch, vegetable ivory lends itself to both delicate forms and more sculptural shapes.
Used since the 19th century for fine carving and luxury buttons, it now appeals to contemporary designers for its sustainability and understated beauty. Its warm, softly aged white pairs harmoniously with gold and gemstones, offering a quiet, refined aesthetic.
Vegetable ivory stands as a precious alternative: an authentic, living material that blends craftsmanship, environmental responsibility and timeless elegance.
