Iolite

Iolite takes its name from the Greek ios, meaning “violet,” a reference to its blue hues softened by subtle purple undertones. A transparent silicate with strong pleochroism, it reveals different colours depending on the viewing angle — a distinctive trait that gives the stone its quiet complexity. Found in Brazil, India and Madagascar, iolite has long been associated with orientation and clarity. The Vikings are believed to have used it as an optical filter to locate the sun on overcast days, earning it the nickname “compass stone.” In ancient Greece, it was considered sacred and used in rituals dedicated to Athena. Its hardness and slightly hazy transparency give it a calm, introspective presence. In some traditions, it is linked to emotional expression and is said to support those who tend to rely more on logic than on feeling. In contemporary jewellery, iolite is appreciated for its refined palette — a luminous, shifting blue-violet that brings a subtle yet confident touch of colour.
