His name is derived from kynos, the Greek word for blue. Because of its dark blue color, the ancient Greeks said that cyanite was a protective stone for sailors. It is a fine stone that was rarely found in jewellery before because of the difficulties of cutting it. It is also for this reason that it was found only in cabochon. Nowdays designers are taking advantage of it's white stripes and showing them as a beautifull particularity of the stone.
Kyanite is best known as a cornflower blue crystal resembling a sapphire. It is most often blue, but may also be white, and sometimes green or even black. The colour does not need to be consistent and can range from transparent to translucent. Kyanite can be distinguished by its beautiful, linear striations that when viewed from the side resemble pages of a book.
This stone is mailnly found in Brazil but also ... in France (Morbihan, Cantal and Var), Switzerland (beautiful crystals in the Gotthard), Austria, Burma, and the United States ( North Carolina), Kenya, Nepal and Kashmir.
Kyanite is considered beneficial for communication and for the throat, and ideal to wear around the neck. It is said to promote the ability to speak easily, to express oneself and to learn new languages - so it is a good stone to carry if you need to make a presentation or give a speech! Furthermore, kyanite is said to enhance creativity and lead to new thoughts. The crystal is often recommended for singers, musicians and writers.
In ancient times, it was believed that a cyanite suspended at the end of a wire could act like a compass and react to the Earth's magnetic field.
