Coral is not a proper mineral stone, it has an organic origin. Coral is composed of calcium carbonate, with magnesia and organic substances. We find the main coral reef in the Mediterranean Sea, Australia, Red Sea ... Today, environmental protection laws have been created in order to protect the barrier reefs, limiting the production of corals for gemstone trade. Sustainable jewellery practises and the respect of both man and nature are issues that WHITE bIRD has at heart. All of our artists and designers respect these laws and share our values.
Unlike most other gemstones, which are of mineral origin, coral is an organic product of the sea, formed by living organisms in tropical and subtropical ocean waters. Growing in branches taking on the appearance of underwater trees, coral has been known as 'sea bamboo' or 'garden of the sea'.

Coral has long been connected to blood because of its red colour; in Ancient Egypt the pharaohs believed each piece of coral contained a drop of divine blood. Coral is believed to give energy and benefit good blood production and circulation. It is also thought to help overcome panic and fear.
Coral is among the most ancient of gem materials, used for adornment since prehistoric times. Coral inlays and ornaments have been found in Celtic tombs from the Iron Age. It was long thought to produce powerful talismans that could stop bleeding, give energy and protect from evil spirits.
