Tsavorite

Tsavorite is named after the Tsavo National Park, on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, where a British geologist discovered it in 1967. Tsavorite belongs to the Garnet group. From an intense green to a green with a hint of yellow, this gem is coloured by vanadium with traces of chromium. The more intense the green colour is, the more popular the tsavorite will be, and the more expensive it will be. This bright sparkling green garnet usually has very few inclusions. Virtues

Tsavorite is believed to help find inner beauty, both in oneself and in others. It is said to help you live your own destiny rather than struggling along a path that is not truly yours. It is also thought to relieve stress at a deep level.

Specifications

Tsavorite is one of two green varieties of garnet. Especially in smaller sizes, tsavorite creates competition for emerald since it is less included in other stones, rarely treated, and more durable. It comes in fresh, highly prized colours - ranging from bright yellowish green to deeper grassy greens, and even slightly bluish -green shades.

History

Tsavorite is named after the Tsavo National Park, on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, where a British geologist discovered it in 1967. The first viable tsavorite mine was set up in 1974 and later that year, the current president of Tiffany & Co. named and introduced the new green gem to the world. Kenya remains the most important source of tsavorite, though some is found in nearby Tanzania and at a few other sites in the world.
