White, pink, red, black
OriginMost of the coral used in jewellery is found in the Mediterranean Sea or in the Pacific off Japan and Taiwan.
VirtuesCoral has long been connected to blood because of its red colour; in Ancient Egypt the pharaohs believed each piece of coral contained a drop of divine blood. Coral is believed to give energy and benefit good blood production and circulation. It is also thought to help overcome panic and fear.
SpecificationsUnlike most other gemstones, which are of mineral origin, coral is an organic product of the sea, formed by living organisms in tropical and subtropical ocean waters. Growing in branches taking on the appearance of underwater trees, coral has been known as 'sea bamboo' or 'garden of the sea'.
Today, environmental protection laws have been created in order to protect the barrier reefs, limiting the production of corals for gemstone trade. Sustainable jewellery practises and the respect of both man and nature are issues that WHITE bIRD has at heart. All of our artists and designers respect these laws and share our values.
