Since 2007, Francesca Villa — a distinctive voice in contemporary high jewellery — has been turning jewels into visual poems.
Born in Italy, she draws inspiration from her childhood in Genoa, where her grandmother’s jewels and her great-grandfather’s stories as a ship captain sparked her lifelong fascination with memory-laden objects. Trained in design and applied arts, she honed her craft with leading Italian houses before setting out on her own path: to unite the exceptional with the precious.
In her “cabinet of curiosities” nestled in the heart of Monferrato, Piedmont, found objects — Victorian buttons, miniature figurines — are transformed into wearable artworks by the skilled hands of her artisans. Using the rare technique of reverse intaglio, she creates striking miniature scenes that give each piece a soul and an unmistakable depth. 18k gold, diamonds, and sapphires are combined with rare and whimsical finds to breathe new life into forgotten treasures.
Like precious “cadavres exquis”, her creations often feature curious elements — from moonfish to fossilised mammoth ivory framed in sapphires. Each jewel is a meeting point between the treasure and the unexpected, offering its wearer an intimate, living story.
